    I dunno…. 😅I love my Mahlkonig x54. Not as fast for sure, but it is a nice flat burr and solid for Filter, Toddy and Espresso (though I use my p64 for espresso). The build quality of the x54 is solid as heck too. Sad to not hear the x54 in the comparison as it’s cheaper and actually a good allrounder rather than being mostly filter!!

    So, it's a $500 plastic filter grinder that really should not be used for espresso, isn't ment for single dosing nor can it dose accurately with a full hopper, has massive static due to its high RPM and burrs are 65mm, just over the new industry standard.

      It's on par with most tbh - the time may vary by like 5-10 seconds - but I look past this when hand grinding and prefer to discuss the ease of grinding. The Knock is by far one of the smoothest 👌

  • @KazeNoSuke

    A fun gift, but requires some fiddling to get a proper brew. At home, I use a stainless steel, Vietnamese coffee filter (with Trung Ngyuen coffee) it takes a couple minutes for the water to go all the way through. With this little filter here, following these directions, the water just rushes right through the coffee, so the taste was unbearably weak. So, after pouring the water, I set the net down in the coffee water for about 3 min. more, pulled it out, then let it drip dry. Still not as strong as the usual, but it will work when backcountry camping.

    What is the use of the safety valve? I thought it should give a hissing sound when water has all boiled ?

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing 2 дні тому

      it's set to about 3 bar pressure. It's in truth not meant to be used often or at all - and is only a safety check in case the boiler gets blocked. Used too often there is a chance the safetly valve can get sticky or stuck from moisture and if so - then it will fail and the moka will pop off quite violently. So long as you're not packing the grounds basket too tight - or filling it with too fine a grind - you can always avoid this 🫶

    I wanted to understand - are dark roasts the only way to get the best out of a cold brew method / particularly this Hario Mizudashi? Also what grind size would you recommend - I went with a coarser grind on my hario ceramic mill super slim!

    • @AlternativeBrewing
      @AlternativeBrewing 6 днів тому

      No - it's really up top you what flavour profile you prefer - dark roasts are going to general be more robust full bodies chocolate forward coffee - and can make a very rich brew incredible for adding to milk. Whereas lighter roast are more likely to be a little more fruity in nature and can easily be enjoyed straight or over ice - and tend, for this reason to lose strength of flavour when added to milk. Coarse is best to ensure the filter stays clean and grounds remain out of the brew. Though it doesn't have to be super coarse. Slowly adjsut finer each time you brew a batch and you'll find that sweet spot 👌

This is my first foray into espresso at home at a serious level and for the price directly from Varia I got the machine and new 58mm cup for just over 500 NZD which is a cracking price IMO (used an old Reddit youtuber discount code still active from 2021!) I've not done a cross product shootout like you have but can confirm general trend/sentiment for ZP6 having great clarity and less body for filter brew coffee with J-Ultra having far more texture and body for espresso. I've not gotten the J-Ultra to produce filter brews that I enjoy.

    Stellar cinematography on this one. Really loved to see the different flow rates between the three dripping at the bottom. That Colombian sounds amazing. Ever since I tried a colombian coffee from Lot61 in Amsterdam I've been aiming for that amazing cup ever since. My lazy butt would probably change the filter two or three times then never change it again 🤣 but very interesting concept though :D Seems like the taste can change quite a bit so I guess trying all three for one coffee can be great to find the "perfect" cup for each. Thanks for sharing.
